Meet our Staff
Rev. Tom Runyon
My wife is Joanna and we have been members of Beaver Dam Baptist Church since 1998. I became the Senior Pastor in November of 2017. Joanna is a school counselor at Crest Middle School (CMS) and we have two children, Joey and Thomas and a wonderful daughter-in-law, Erica! Joanna and I enjoy spending time with our extended family, traveling, and shopping at thrift stores looking for treasures at a bargain. I enjoy anything outdoors and particularly like to fish the streams of western NC and the surf of the Outer Banks. Joanna loves family and devotes much of her leisure time to loving her family. We are recent empty nesters with our boys starting their own journeys. We look forward to this new phase of life together.
As Senior Pastor, I have charge to equip the church for the ministry of the gospel and to care for the needs of this flock. I strive to utilize the spiritual gifting of this congregation to help me accomplish those tasks. My passion and gift to the church is preaching and teaching. I consider the pulpit ministry and the charge to love people my greatest pastoral responsibility.
We are a family church that loves each other. I welcome you to join us and to share in the ministry of the gospel!
Rev. Phil Hughes
Associate Pastor of Discipleship
I have served Beaver Dam Baptist Church as Associate Pastor since March of 2002. My wife, Charlotte and I have 2 grown children. We enjoy reading, day-trips to the mountains, fitness walking, and browsing in antique stores. Charlotte is a retired teacher, formerly with the Cleveland County School System. She enjoys quilting, and collects vintage sewing machines. I enjoy playing the guitar and disc golf. Weekly I go to one of our local nursing care facilities and conduct sing-alongs. We enjoy “the old hymns.” The residents as well get a kick out of the 60’s & 70’s folk/pop tunes I throw in occasionally.
My responsibilities at Beaver Dam include oversight of discipling ministries for all ages and family structures, along with Senior Adult Ministry, I am a 1977 graduate of Gardner-Webb College.
Mr. David Roach
I am a resident of Rutherfordton, North Carolina, and have been playing the piano since the young age of 5. After my parents discovered me playing church songs without music, they started me in piano lessons with Sara Moss of Forest City, NC. I continued lessons for the next 11 years with Sara studying classical music (my favorite) as well as developing my ear for playing Southern Gospel through the guidance of another teacher, Frankie Harder of Hendersonville, NC.
I am also the accompanist for the chorus at Chase High School in Forest City and the pianist for the Southern Gospel group "In His Glory." I teach more than 30 private piano students. I am a graduate of Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC and in 2002 was recognized by the University as a distinguished graduate. I am married to Janet and have two children, Wesley and Ashley.
I realize that my talent comes from God and I have devoted my life to use that talent to honor Him. My heart's desire is for people to be blessed and see God through our Music Ministry at Beaver Dam.
