The Word of the Month: "Heaven" — Novella McClung
The word for today is Heaven. When you Google Heaven you learn that Heaven is the place where God lives with the angels and the good. Heaven is also being in the presence of God and a place of supreme bliss. If we are truthful with ourselves, we all want to go to Heaven and we don’t understand where it is or how to get there.
Most believe if you are a good person you can live in Heaven. Some believe Heaven is getting your own box of favorite chocolates. If you pay attention you will hear true fishermen talking about being able to enjoy Heaven fishing in ‘the river that is the water of life’ (Revelation 22:1). Many folks dismiss Heaven as a crutch or fantasy.
We taught hundreds of children the little chorus “Heaven (my highlight and in following too) is a Wonderful Place” by Psalty and Ernie Rettino. It goes like this: ” Heaven is a wonderful place; filled with glory and grace. I want to see my Savior’s face. Heaven is a wonderful place – I want to go there.”
The Bible has much to say about Heaven. There are over 500 references to Heaven. In Genesis 1:1-2 we learn God created Heaven with a word. In Psalm 73:25, Asaph declared his loyalty to God by stating nothing on earth compares to his relationship with God who is in Heaven. In Philippians 3:20 we learn as believers we have our citizenship in Heaven and in John 14:2 there are plenty of rooms. You don’t have to share a room with anyone!
My husband had a conversation recently with two six year olds. They were sad because one lost an aunt and one a grandfather. They were told they went to Heaven. That made them feel better but they didn’t know where Heaven really was. One told the other that ‘my brother said if you go to heaven you will have to eat mice and drink sweat’. (Can you figure out he was an older brother trying to pester a little sister J)?
That still begs the question, “How do you get there?” The Bible is very clear. You might admit (recognize) you are a sinner. Only Holy God is Pure and Jesus, His Son lived a sinless life on this earth. This is not hard, we all know we do wrong. The second step involves believing that God sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for our sin in order for us to have a relationship with Holy God. You cannot spell it any other way. (John 3:16; Acts 16:31, John 14:6, John 20:31). Once you confess who Jesus is and what He did on the cross then you will want to live for Him in every area of your life. The prize – Heaven – being in the presence of God!
Bottom line is we all want to go to Heaven. If you believe God’s Word (Bible) you have the roadmap. In Revelation 21:4 we find it will be a ‘wonderful place,’ without having to ‘eat mice and drink sweat.’ Don’t spend your time on earth trying to figure out Heaven. Spend your time getting ready ‘to go there’ by living for the Lord. Prepare now by studying God’s Word and letting all who see you living for the Lord find the way to Heaven- ‘ the wonderful place.’ Remember: “Heaven is a wonderful place; filled with glory and grace. I want to see my Savior’s face. Heaven is a wonderful place – I want to go there.”
